An accurate appraisal of earthwork, or inventories is available through a variety of methods. Since all mapping is now done on computers using digital terrain models many clients use existing data to compute volumes based on previous mapping or proposed design. M.A.N. can also compute surface to surface volumes based on data collected from different sets of photography or provided by the client.

For free standing piles it is sometimes best to go back to the tried and true method of volume by contours. Contours are, in effect cross sections taken in the vertical plane whose distance can be varied by the operator to account for pile conditions. Contours are plotted and offer the ability to view the size, shape, and configuration of the piles as they were read. When computing volumes from contours, the shape and base where the pile sits are crucial. For this reason someone familiar with the yard is usually asked to outline and identify the piles on a photo enlargement of the site. The accuracy of the readings can be greatly increased by...
  • Careful and accurate outlining of the piles.
  • Placing piles on regular surfaces when possible.
  • Not piling material on slopes or against walls.
  • Dressing piles so the surfaces are relatively flat.
  • Avoid collections of individual dumped piles.
  • Avoid placing piles on or against other piles.
  • Maintain consistant reusable control off site or in areas that won't be disturbed.
