Increased traffic flow on many highways combined with safety and liability concerns add even more complications to the already complex problem of upgrading an aging transportation infrastructure. Photogrammetry is increasingly seen as a solution to some of the safety problems. H.A.P.M. uses standard photogrammetric practices, combined with photography flown at very low altitudes to produce pavement profile readings which can yield accuracy under 0.1 foot on a regular basis. This accuracy along with the ease of taking readings as close as 10' apart on multiple profiles per surface make H.A.P.M. a cost effective way to increase the information available, maintain accuracy, and lower the risk of sending survey crews onto busy roadways.
